Circolo San Giuseppe Filarmonika Sagra Familja, was founded in
Kalkara on the first of June 1897, with the intention of organising the
outdoor festivities in honour of the titular patron, Saint Joseph, on
the second Sunday of July annually. In order to fulfil this earnest
mission, as early as its inception, members and supporters began to
decorate the Kalkara streets with new festive decorations, whilst
others took care of the provision of fireworks during the feast days.
As years passed by, the celebration of the feast became a passion, so
much so, fireworks enthusiasts began to manufacture aerial fireworks in
fields nearby to the village.
This eventually meant the foundation of another section in our society, and hence, Għaqda tan-Nar Sagra Familja,
that is, the fireworks section, emerged. All work is voluntarily done
by keen members, all possessing required training. This contributed
towards a greater variety of aerial fireworks during the feast week,
and the introduction of pyrotechnic shows especially on Friday during
the renowned celebrative band march with the statue of the Holy Family.
During this day, a mechanised ground fireworks show has been
established during the past years, giving rise to numerous visitors
eagerly watching this unique spectacle in Kalkara and the surroundings.
Today we are aiming towards continually acquiring pyrotechnic
achievements in one of the smallest villages in Malta.
