The St Mary Fireworks Complex forms part of the Central Committee of
St Mary Band Club Għaxaq AD 1873. The first complex was built in 1990
in another location in Għaxaq closer to the centre of the same village
but because of the enlargement of the village the complex couldn't
operate anymore because of the residents' safety, so the society found
another location to build up another complex, the one they operate in
nowadays.
All the members of the complex work on a
voluntary basis in order to celebrate the feast of the Assumption of St
Mary, one of the most popular feasts in Malta held on the 15th of
August. The pyrotechnic shows at Għaxaq start from the 9th August
reaching their climax on the 15th. The annual spectacular show is held
on the 14th August starting at 21:00 hrs. The synchronised display
consists of spider webs, spherical shells, several barrages and the
traditional multi break cracker and colour shells. As soon as the
aerial fireworks display comes to an end, a ground display immediately
starts. Most of these ground fireworks consist of large mechanical
works, including the traditional Catherine wheels varying in colours
and effects accompanied by music and sometimes by visual shows.
